How to choose the right Foundation

Foundations can be extremely tricky. Not only do we have to content with an assortment of types of foundations, we also have to consider our skin tone, color, and texture as well when choosing the right fit. Add to that the need to ensure that the product doesn’t contain toxic ingredients and it can be quite a monumental task.

In this post, let’s talk about how to choose the right foundation for your skin tone and color. This isn’t as easy as just picking a color that is close to your skin tone. You need to start by first determining the undertones of your skin. These could be warm, cool, or neutral. The undertones of your skin are independent of your actual skin color. So how do you determine your undertones?

If your veins appear bluish or purplish and you look better in silver than gold, you have a cool undertone. If you veins, however, are greener in appearance and gold looks better on you than silver, you have a warm undertone. If, however, you look equally good in gold and silver and your veins are not inclined towards a distinct color/appearance, you have a neutral undertone.

Once you have determined your undertone, you are better equipped to find the best shade of foundation for your skin. Foundations for cool undertones will look slightly pink in the bottle while foundations for warm undertones will look slightly yellow in the bottle. With neutral undertones, a slightly peach-ish appearance of foundation in the bottle may work best.

In addition to your undertones, you need to determine the surface color of your skin. This is all about the amount of pigmentation you have in your skin and it can change depending on seasons and sun exposure. The surface color of your skin may be darker during the summer because of increased sun exposure and you may lose this extra pigmentation during winters when your sun exposure is limited.

Surface color of skin ranges from fair to medium to dark. The best area of your face to help determine your surface skin color is your jaw line because it is generally less affected by skin color changes than the rest of your face. Once you have both your undertone and surface color of skin figured out, it makes finding the right shade of foundation a much easier task.
