It's summer time and it’s time to hit the beach. There is nothing more satisfying than frolicking in the waves and sleeping on the sands. But after a full day of soaking up the rays, you may have to contend with more than what you bargained for…we are talking of course of dreaded sunburns!
Getting sunburnt can put a damper on the best of days but don’t worry; we’ve got you covered in part 1 of this 2 part series on protecting and also healing your skin through the most powerful botanicals and natural elements to ensure all the fun without any of the pain. So let’s dive right in.
Ideally prevention is better than cure. So in this part, we’ll focus on how to protect your skin from getting sunburnt in the first place. We cannot stress enough the importance of sunscreen. You want to look for a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15 as well as broad spectrum coverage to ensure your skin is protected from both UVA and UVB radiation. It is also extremely important to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and to ensure that you are using the required amount of sunscreen.
Wearing a wide brimmed hat as well as sitting in the shade are also precautions to take to prevent sunburns. Other than this, there are a few cold pressed oils that have naturally occurring SPF that you can use to protect your skin. These include coconut oil, almond oil, red raspberry seed oil, and carrot seed oil. Shea butter, zinc oxide, and even rice flour have naturally occurring SPF. Most of these also have a high content of antioxidants which help your skin become more resilient and prevent sun damage.
There is also evidence to suggest that maintaining an appropriate diet can also prevent your skin from being susceptible to sun damage. This is ideally an anti-inflammatory diet which is high in healthy saturated, monounsaturated, and omega 3 fatty acids as well as rich in vegetables while avoiding processed and unhealthy foods. Vitamin D supplements and antioxidant support also help protect your skin.
We have a range of natural sunscreens with high SPF and broad spectrum coverage from brands like Goddess Garden, 100% Pure®, Consonant Skincare, and Coola. So slather some on, use natural oils, and eat well to keep your skin protected today.
